YOUR FIRST AND LAST NERVE

– Ma. Sopihia Kyle Bravo –

Out of sight, out of mind? Or does this really depend on how much you love that person, enough to think of them even when they are not there? Or just enough to love them when they are? It depends of what type of long distance relationship you are in; prolonged separation for example one of you are going to travel is very different to living far apart from each other but still being able to see each other. How can we control ourselves if we cannot feel their presence?

The nervous system is the master controlling and communicating system of the body. Every thought, action, and emotion reflects its activity. Its signaling device, or means of communicating with body cells, is electrical impulses, which rapid and specific and cause almost immediate response. The nervous system does not work alone to regulate and maintain body homeostasis, the endocrine system is a second important regulating system. However, our main topic here is nervous system, so let’s get back to that. The nervous system is the most complex part of the body, as they govern our thoughts, feelings, and bodily functions.

The nervous system consists of two main parts: central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) where CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord whereas PNS consists of ganglia and nerves which connect CNS to different parts of the body. The main function of the nervous system is to coordinate the voluntary and involuntary actions of the human body and transmit signals between different parts of the body. But if you have fallen in love, you’re not in doubt about it. The difference is that falling in love is a force of gravity beyond your control .

Our nervous system coordinates muscles so that we can do things which need thinking like reading, writing, cycling or dancing. The nervous system also coordinates things which we don’t have to think about, like heart beat and breathing. The human nervous system receives information from the surroundings, processes it, interprets it and then responds accordingly. The nervous system also passes information from one internal system to another. For example, as soon as we put food in our mouth, it immediately causes the release of saliva from the salivary glands. Loving is something you hesitate to commit to. Falling in love is something your heart has committed to without your brain’s consent.

The units which make up the nervous system are called nerve cells or neurons. So, neuron is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system. We can now say that nervous system is made of special cells called neurons. Sometimes neurons are more important than us because they are special.

Neuron is the largest cell in the body (which looks like an electric wire). Neurons contain the same basic parts as any other animal cell but their structure is specially adapted to be able to carry messages over large distances in the body quickly. The neurons carry messages in the form of electrical signals called electrical impulses or nerve impulses.
